Fantasy Powerhouse?

Posted on: March 7, 2008 2:04 pm

Musings from the public library on a day off...

I signed up in an autodraft league with a couple colleagues from CBS (ksudodgers and brony). You set draft priorities by position and hers's what I came up with. Ksudodgers and I just swung a major trade. I swapped Vernon Wells, Chase Utley and Jon Garland for Justin Verlander, Grady Sizemore and Ian Kinsler. It's nice to actually find a realistic trading partner, we swapped proposals and I feel we each got solid value.

I think my team could be a powerhouse (don't we all think that in March?)

Here is my current roster:

Starters

C Brian McCann

1B Ryan Howard

2B Ian Kinsler

SS Hanley Ramirez

3B Garrett Atkins

CF Grady Sizemore

RF Ichiro Suzuki

LF Josh Willingham

Utility Kevin Youkilis

Reserves

2B Jeff Kent

C Ryan Doumit

OF Jermaine Dye

DH Gary Sheffield (must make 5 non DH starts before ineup eligible, that's why I got him off waivers)

Starting Pitchers

Justin Verlander

Cole Hamels

Roy Halladay

Joe Blanton

Relievers

Francisco Cordero

Jason Isinghausen

Brad Lidge

Reserve Pitchers

Gil Meche

Jamie Walker

What do you think guys?

Fantasy Powerhouse?

I like your team. Every position is solid except for outfielder and Utility player, but you could still play Sheffield at U even with him being only DH eligible. That'll give you some more power in the lineup, better than Youkilis and especially in the Tigers lineup. Also, I dont like Willingham as an overall hitter, still too streaky, but he's a decent third outfielder.

Your front 3 pitchers are great. The only thing I would worry about it the fact that Halladay, Blanton, and Meche aren't that great of strikeout pitchers, and Meche and Blanton won't get you too many wins. Understandably they are the #4 and #5 pitchers, but I like to have the insurance of either wins or strikeouts because that's where the most points are in pitchers along with innings. Who are the free agents in your league. Some that I keep an eye out for that were FAs in mine; Gallardo, Marcum, McGowan, Garza, etc..

Looks pretty good. Is Sheffield eligible to play utility? I would think on power alone Sheff may be a better option than Youkilis.

I also think you got the better end of the trade. Verlander and Sizemore speak for themselves, but I think Kinsler is going to breakout this year. Utley is good, but Wells and Garland, at least to me, are question marks this season.

Fantasy Powerhouse?

Here are some notables bpm...

Gorzellany, Maholm, McGowan, Miguel Batista, Jeremy Guthrie, Boof Bonser, Zach Greinke. No Gallardo, Marcum or Garza.

I might make a run at McGowan because of both wins and Ks, or Bonser for K's.

I think you are absolutely correct, now that I think about that utility role. I'll put Shef at U.

Thanks buckeye22.

I got confused. In a Yahoo league last year there was no utility position, and they had that rule.

I'll put Shef in as utility. Makes me very surprised he was available as a FA...

I would definitely nab McGowan tigertowner. Hang on to your pitchers you have already, I like to keep my reserves at 3-3 hitters pitchers or 2-4 (h-p). Maybe drop Doumit, McCann is a very solid catcher and I think Doumit is still splitting time this season unless I'm mistaken.

Papi-

I just dropped Jamie Walker and added Dustin McGowan, then reserved Joe Blanton and made McGowan the fourth starter.

Ryan Doumit can play OF as well (and will) and started to hit with authority in August, so I think I'll keep him because McCann had some injury issues last year.

Doumit may not catch regularly for Pittsburgh but the position eligibility (C and OF) is helpful to me in case something happens.

And Walker can't do anything for me. He was the final pick in the autodraft and there are no points for holds in the league.

I like McGowan as a breakout candidate. He'll get a decent amount of wins to start pitching for the Blue Jays, but his strikeout numbers are already good and should improve now that he has a full season under his wing. He adds a good amount of depth to your rotation! Good luck in your league tigertowner.

Fantasy Powerhouse?

Wow, with the exception of Atkins and Willingham- I own a team VERY similar to this offensively in a CBS H2H Lge. With Verlander now, your SPs are strong... I like the fantasy promise for FCord this season in Cincy...Lidge-Izzy =good RPs there, JWalker though...unless he comes out the box blazin' I'm a little worried 'bout that one...If he can put up 2 or 3 SVs a week, fine- keep yer expectations in check w/him though...If you can somehow move Youkilis to OF or 3B, and insert Sheff @ UT- GRAVY... Willingham will put up decent #s, but I put him and JDye in the same boat=ride the hot hand there... Overall ,a playoff-worthy fantasy team in my eyes. You may find better options at reserve other than Doumit and Kent after the season starts- If you could pick-up another guy that can get saves regularly-in my CBS Lges historically a SV is 10 pts just like a W, so I sometimes roll with 5 CLOSERS,and 2 SPs that are decent double-starts,depending on SP&RP matchups, alike. McCann is a stat monster and this year may be the year HE becomes fantasy C extrordinare...keep our fingers crossed he stays healthy... Good Luck!!

Fantasy Powerhouse?

I would say a definite powerhouse, especially with the moves you've made.  I think you got the better of that trade, even if Wells becomes the comeback player of the year.  I'd take that team anytime in any fantasy league.
