Can we get a "Do Over"?

Posted on: April 4, 2008 5:19 pm

Thoughts while I am seeking someone to "Talk me off the Ledge..."

What on Earth is going on here?

The mighty (?) Tigers are the only team in major league baseball without a victory.

I know it's only 0-4 but we waited all winter for this?

I was at the opener and enjoyed it a lot. Never mind that I have personally attended five straight losses. It was an exciting ballgame.

The team followed this effort with two sleepwalking losses that wound up a stunning three game sweep at the hands of the Royals. I am not going to denigrate them. Hell, they swept us at home to end the 2006 season, costing us a division championship that we still have not won since1987.

And they do have some excellent young pitchers. The pen between Yoakim Soria closing and Edwin Nunez setting up looks excellent. Everybody talks about Gil Meche but I think Brian Bannister is the diamond of this emerging big three. All he did was stuff the Bengals bats where, er well, you know where - in game two. Zero runs and three hits in seven sterling innings. If Zach Grienke can maintain his composure, he makes it a very solid group. And I'd say he did Thursday. He stuffed the Tigers ba-t-s ...err I have said enough...HAD enough already!

I'm not here to wax poetically about the Royals starting pitchers!

Jim Leyland summed it up perfectly following the 4-1 loss yesterday.

"We stunk."

All told, the team went 2-22 in the series against Kansas City with runners in scoring position. Of course, most of this was in game one because they had only a few runners in scoring position the last two games in the series, and but one Thursday.

They went scoreless for eighteen innings consecutively.  This is the club that many pegged to challenge the 1,000 runs scored barrier! They may eventually make it but I'm ready to see them start scoring.

Well, they did today. But they id soething else even better. Something that you don't like your home team to do better...

The White Sox beat the Tigers 8-5 and made it 0-4 and the Stranders, who left another dozen men on base in the first four innings!

For those who don't feel like doing the math, they were perfect here! The maximum number or runners you can leave on base in four innings is...ready for this?

TWELVE!

Gary Sheffield has a torn tendon in his ring finger and could be out for weeks.

Miguel Cabrera has a strained quad.

Curtis Granderson is at least two or three weeks away from returning.

Jason Grilli is still starting bigger fires than they had out in San Diego last fall.

I know. I know.

I know it's only four games in.

But still, can we get a do over, or something.

Somebody, somewhere, anywhere (even Cleveland), find me a silver lining in this swiling mass of gray and black.

And do me a favor.

Talk me off the ledge. It's still really damp and cold out here in Motown...Maybe Miss America can do something...I need your sweet smile honey. Come on back to the ballpark. And coach Mr. Grilli on how not to be such a gas can if you can, dear.

Can we get a "Do Over"?

During the off season, nobody could write enough about how great the Tigers lineup was going to be. It still might, but they sure have sputtered out of the gate. Maybe Miss America will throw out the first pitch for every home game. That might give you something to watch.

Can we get a "Do Over"?

I am not going to become discouraged yet.  Many teams have gotten off to slow starts and struggled at the beginning of the season.  Is this going tobe a sign of things to come or is it just a cold spell they are in right now?  I dont know, only time will tell.  I believe this is a really good team that just needs a few wins and they will right themselves.

Can we get a "Do Over"?

It's been ugly, but today encouraged me some. Outside of Robertson and Grilli, the pitching was pretty good, and the offense did score as much today as the first 3 games. Once they start bringing some of the RISP home, they'll be fine.

With that said, tomorrow is a must win. With the schedule they have the rest of the month, they need to get a couple of wins and get some confidence. 0-6 or even 1-5 heading to Boston could lead to a disaster of an April.

My glass is half full...the silver lining?  It's only 4 games and they play 158 more.

A Mulligan would be nice.

The Tigers better step it up though...all that preseason hype about scoring 1000 runs and having the best offense in the game just put a bullseye on their backs and every team will be shooting for them.  The injuries are a concern - three already (Granderson, Sheffield, Cabrera) and it's still the first week of the season.  The pitching has been less than stellar, to say the least.  Maybe (hopefully) the one pitcher that has been the biggest concern (Willis) will pitch well enough to get the Tigers their first win tomorrow.

Can we get a "Do Over"?

The 1998 Yankees lost 4 of their first  5 games before becoming one of the winningest teams in baseball history.  I'm not saying the Tigers will win 114 games, but they won't match the ineptitude of their 2003 119 loss season.

Gary Sheffield is technically listed day to day.  Here's hoping he plays through the pain.
Miggy thinks he'll be back this weekend.
Curtis Granderson will be back someday.
As for Grilli, he's dead to me.  Technically, I've embalmed myself in Labatt everytime he pitches so my recollection of his atrocities to baseball are somewhat muddled.

The Old Man will fix this. He has to.  Doesn't he?

See what happens when you have expectations of your Detroit sports teams?  Have we learned nothing from our beloved Lions?  The Tigers 2005 season was so very special because we expected so little of them.   Their storybook rise from something less than mediocrity made us believe again.  Belief, fellow Detroit sports fan, is a perilous thing.

HAHA classic... As a Red Sox fan, I'm starting to feel sorry for you guys. Up until right before the beginning of the regular season, I was afraid the Tigers would finally come out and destroy everyone with the great pitching and powerful line-up. Man, it's looking much worse for you guys now. I wasn't very thrilled with the Red Sox off-season, but the Tigers are looking worse. Good luck to you guys this year.
